My mom is Puerto Rican, but growing up she would almost never say we were Puerto Rican, or hispanic, or latina. She would say we were Taíno and Spanish.
In school the teacher taught us that Taíno people "went extinct" after Columbus landed in Hispañola. I would always get angry and confused about this, go home and ask my mom, and hear more stories about her abuela and my abuela and how our ancestors fled into the mountains to escape Columbus.
