#Kiwix is an app that lets you easily browse wiki and stackexchange sites offline.

It's extremely useful for people who cannot access a reliable internet connection for whatever reason. (For example, some sailors will download a copy of wikipedia onto Kiwix in port to browse it while at sea.)

Kiwix is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS:

kiwix.org/downloads

You can also make a local Kiwix server on a Raspberry Pi:

Rich text is classist. Everyone should use plain text. Think of the poor! *shakes tiny fist*

I'm currently updating an Arch machine which I haven't touched in 3 years. 10 GB. Well, let's see what happens

Yesterday I learned something new about boosting on #Mastodon: if you boost the first message of a thread, then it isn't necessarily true that all your followers can click on it to see the entire thread. Replies aren't fetched by remote instances. If you need the last message of a thread, then all its ancestors will get fetched by remote instances. Your followers might still not see all the threads that branched off of the original, but they will see at least the one thread.

Using Free Software doesn't automatically give people freedom.

The freedom is in the user's ability to modify the software when it does something user doesn't like, and make it do what user wants it to do.

As long as there's someone in the world for whom modifying the software they use is not an option, be it because of license, excessive complexity, lack of time, lack of patience, or because the person is afraid or overwhelmed by the concept of modifying something - that person is not free.

'When registering an account with #Telegram, the app helpfully uploads the entire Contacts database to Telegram's servers (optional on iOS).

This allows Telegram to build a huge social network map of all the users and how they know each other.

It is extremely difficult to remain anonymous while using Telegram because the social network of everyone you communicate with is known to them (and whomever has pwned their servers).'

I also spent yesterday evening with my friend walking around small-to-medium electronics shops around to see what OS was installed on the laptops shown. It was 60% Endless OS, a couple of Mints, a few FreeDOSes, and only 2 actual Windows 10 installs (unregistered). Peculiar.

Charger for my laptop broke, and now I can't do my work. Searching for a new one, while also doing... Nothing. This is so strange. Maybe O should go out a bit

TIL: (from my 12 year old Son) Epic Games reward Fortnite players (with an in-game skin) when they enable two-factor sign-in. Love that "two-factor" is in his vernacular, and enabling it is promoted to the young Fortnite audience.
